Student Seminar on Badhwar Monograph

In this workshop, led by Shawn Klein, participants will discuss The Objectivist Studies Monograph "Is Virtue Only A Means To Happiness?" by Neera Badhwar. Over the course of three sessions, participants will discuss Badhwar’s argument for happiness as the ultimate value, her discussion of Rand and Aristotle’s account of virtue—in particular the role emotions play—and her argument against the instrumentalist view of virtue. Throughout the sessions, the response essays will be incorporated into the discussions.

This course is intended primarily for students. Space is limited in order to keep discussions active, lively, and focused. This session requires a separate application. Deadline: May 26.

Mr. Klein received his masters in philosophy from Arizona State University. He has lectured at the Center’s Advanced Seminar and the Summer Seminar, and taught philosophy at various colleges in Arizona and New York. He currently teaches at Arizona State University and Mesa Community College.

An Actor’s Journey, Part II: Motivating the Scene—An Acting Demonstration of Purpose & Commitment

The techniques that actors use to create full, rich, interesting characters for the stage can be used by all of us to bring an increased richness and vitality to our daily life. As an actor prepares to work on a scene, he usually begins by asking himself some basic questions: What is my purpose or objective? What do I want? Why do I want it? What’s at stake? What obstacles are in my way and how will I overcome them? What action will I take? The way an actor works on answering these questions and choosing actions in a scene can have relevance for all of us.

This improvisational workshop participants will have an opportunity to practice some of these techniques by participating in an improvisational scene. This workshop is limited to 16 participants, first come-first served.

Ms. Robinson is a theatrical producer, director, and teacher with a background in psychology and a Masters of social work.

Yoga Demystified Workshop
