I just finished Atlas Shrugged.  Second exposure to these ideas after The Fountainhead.  Enjoyed both very much.

I'm wondering where the school of thought has gone since then.  There must be a variety of strands.  Can anyone provide some objective perspective or overview?  Is Libertarianism the only formal institution associated with it, and is that association explicitly acknowledged?

Hi,

I am new as well, but think I can asnwer your question...you will find that the formal 'institution' associated with Rand's works is Objectivism not Libertarianism. The book 'Objectivism: The philosphy of Ayn Rand' by Leonard Peikoff will fill you in if you really want to get into the fundamentals but personally I like to admire her work from afar and not associate myself with the philospohy or the movement, unless of course there are people out there who consider themselves to be evolving objectivists rather than those who view it as a closed system, if so then I would love to hear from you all!

I'm curious as to what it is about objectivism that keeps you at a distance?

There are whole host of scholars who are bringing Ayn Rand into University scholarship, in particular, trying to strengthen the connection between Aristotle and Objectivism, particularly in the political realm. Try Douglas Rasmussen and Douglas Den Uyl's "Liberty and Nature", and "Norms of Liberty".

It's amusing to see a thread where responses are months apart...

Ideas are just useless theoretic academic rhetoric unless they become manifest in the real world...

...and the ONLY way they become manifest is when someone ACTS on them.

So what are YOU doing about it?

I'll patiently wait a few months for a response. (lol!)

Well, Greg, I guess there just aren't that many egoists in the world. =P

As for my part, it's mainly educating as many people as I can about rationality.  Then I let them come to their own conclusions about the world today.

Hi salmongirl,

It's good to see some more new posters here. It only takes a few to wake up a board...

Teaching is a good approach... because the best teacher can be your own rational behavior and the beneficial consequences it sets into motion in your life.

I'm a literal mechanical type, and so enjoy implementing Rand's Capitalist principles in business... and they work like a charm.

Take Care,

Greg
