11-30-2006, 10:15 PM Lew Joined on 12-01-2006 Posts 4 new to the school I just finished Atlas Shrugged.  Second exposure to these ideas after The Fountainhead.  Enjoyed both very much. I'm wondering where the school of thought has gone since then.  There must be a variety of strands.  Can anyone provide some objective perspective or overview?  Is Libertarianism the only formal institution associated with it, and is that association explicitly acknowledged?     Report

02-15-2007, 6:33 AM MattJ Joined on 02-12-2007 Posts 16 Re: new to the school Hi,  I am new as well, but think I can asnwer your question...you will find that the formal 'institution' associated with Rand's works is Objectivism not Libertarianism. The book 'Objectivism: The philosphy of Ayn Rand' by Leonard Peikoff will fill you in if you really want to get into the fundamentals but personally I like to admire her work from afar and not associate myself with the philospohy or the movement, unless of course there are people out there who consider themselves to be evolving objectivists rather than those who view it as a closed system, if so then I would love to hear from you all!      Report

Try Douglas Rasmussen and Douglas Den Uyl's "Liberty and Nature", and "Norms of Liberty".    Report

Ideas are just useless theoretic academic rhetoric unless they become manifest in the real world... ...and the ONLY way they become manifest is when someone ACTS on them. Teaching is a good approach... because the best teacher can be your own rational behavior and the beneficial consequences it sets into motion in your life.
